Went to the NSW Quilt Show, run by the NSW Quilt Guild. There were, apparently, shenanigans with the organisation running the Sydney Craft And Quilt Fair, and the NSW Guild is now $60K in loss as a result? Or something. Not entirely sure what's going on, I'm out of it - too busy already.
This year, I did sign up to volunteer, though. I had time off, I was free, I figured it was a good opportunity to help do some white-gloving (put on white gloves and help people who are going through the quilts - with the gloves on, you can touch the quilts to show them the back when that's a relevant part of their entry.
Oh, and I won a President's Award for Scrapbox Elegy!
It's called "Scrapbox Elegy" and the label reads:
"Goodbye my scrap bag!
(haha jk - every quilter knows scraps breed every time you make a new scrap quilt)"
It's roughly based off a traditional hourglass block as the centre of a nine-patch, with half-square triangles at each corner, and a solid at the cardinal points.
The fabrics used ranged from a material my mother made a vest for me and my sisters when we were in primary/elementary school, to prized and rare ranges by modern designers, to quilting squares I picked up off the "will no-one rid me of this troublesome fabric" table at the retreat where I got these blocks done.
I put it into the "no judging" category, because the quilting is crappy, the seams don't line up (which is why the quilting is crappy), and the binding is machine sewn and not very well at that. But evidently, the design "spoke" sufficiently to someone to be given an "I like this vibe" award!
(No prize; there isn't one for this award. That's okay. I get boasting rights.)
Apparently, though, I do have the vibe going - I won the President's Award two years ago, too!
I have otherwise been sewing sewing sewing this week - need a few things for travelling
- darts into cotton shirts that are a few sizes too large, so they fit a bit nicer
-elastic into an underbust of a bought cotton dress, so it fits better and pulls up a little, which means it's not trailing the ground all the time
-expandable bag that was to be for shoes, but turned out to be too small, so it's now a bag for medicines
-elastic into a muslin (the muslin does not fill me with confidence that I want to make it properly)
- took the elastic out of the muslin and put it into the waistband of a pair of 'harem' pants I bought in Turkey 2022
- fixed my Tea House Dress, which had torn a little at the v-neck. I stabilised the dreas yoke by machine-stitching an embroidery over it, and did a very small fix with a zig-zag stitch at the point where the tear had happened. Hopefully that will keep it from tearing any more. And I must be more careful when taking it off.
Not done:
- expandable bag that is for shoes (I have the pieces, just need to sew it now)
- new Tea House Dress in green (have the pieces, just need to sew it together): the style looks really good on me and I do want another version of it
Might do it in the next couple of days? Maybe?
